1. What is collaboration technology?
2. Getting started with emerging collaboration technologies

alphaWorks provides emerging collaboration technologies from IBM Research and development labs. Along with the technology downloads, there are demos, discussion forums, and resources that allow you to interact with creators of the technology and the broader user community.

1. What is collaboration technology?

Collaboration technologies enable virtual communication and the sharing of information across devices such as computers, cellular technology, and PDAs. Collaboration tools and components offered by alphaWorks allow for quick development of commerce and other applications.

alphaWorks has collaboration technologies in the following categories:

  • Accessibility: Support tools that improve access and use.
  • Globalization: Java internationalization application programming interface (API) allows the creation of multilingual applications for storing and loading languages; formatting messages; and displaying, comparing, and collating text.
  • Media: Media technology provides a conferencing environment for efficient collaboration by sharing off-the-shelf applications (such as document editors, text editors, and multimedia) among systems and audiovisual data among conference participants.
  • Messaging: Messaging tools can provide just-in-time information and technical background required by technical support professionals and others who design and configure collaboration solutions.
  • Utilities: These tools allow or enhance collaboration.
  • Voice: Voice technologies enable development and integratation of computer telephony systems in less time by incorporating many advanced features such as voice recognition, text-to-speech, and faxing.
  • Usability: Tools that improve the usability of technology.
  • Workflow: Tools that map out work flow and process.

2. Getting started with emerging collaboration technologies

Get started with these collaboration technologies on alphaWorks: NotesBuddy is a lightweight tool for Lotus Notes Internet mail and Lotus Sametime that announces important new mail by voice, pager, or display. Instant messaging and buddy status are integrated with e-mail to produce a single messaging tool.

Also try the popular digital media technology IBM Toolkit for MPEG-4 which consists of a set of Java classes and APIs with five sample applications: three cross-platform playback applications and two tools for generating MPEG-4 content for use with MPEG-4-compliant devices.

Browse through the collaboration technologies or search for a collaboration topic to find a technology of interest to you. You can also join the discussion about any alphaWorks technology to learn more. And let us know what you think; your feedback is important to us is shaping the alphaWorks site and what we bring you.
