IBM Toolkit for Data Collection and Visual Analysis for Multi-Core Systems

Data Collector for Linux® component:

Operating systems: Linux kernel 2.6.14 or above

Hardware: x86, x86_64, or ppc64

Software: The following must be set:

• CONFIG_KPROBES
• CONFIG_RELAY or CONFIG_DEBUGFS
• CONFIG_KALLSYMS

Data Collector for Java™ on multi-core component:

Hardware:
• x86, x86_64, or ppc64
• at least 200 MB hard disk space

Software: Java Run-time Environment (JRE) 5.0 or 6.0 (IBM's® or Sun's)

Visual Analyzer component:

Hardware:
• at least 512 MB RAM (preferably 1 GB or more)
• at least 50 MB hard disk space
• display resolution of at least 1024 x 768

1. Download the tool packages.
2. Extract VisualAnalyzer.zip into a directory on your local machine.
3. Extract DCC.zip into a directory on your Linux system.
4. Extract Driver.zip into the same directory if you want to monitor and analyze OS/hardware behaviors.
5. Run the install.sh file found in the bin directory in your installation directory on Linux. This action will install the DCC agent library (as well as the driver, if chosen).
6. Run your Java application using the following command:

   java -agentlib:$THORDIR/lib/ThorAgent

7. Download the trace file generated to your local directory (default extension is .trace).
8. Find the executable file named THOR.exe under your Visual Analyzer installation directory, and open the trace file.
