What is Emerging Technologies Explorer?

The Emerging Technologies Explorer supplies a user interface for consolidating ETTK (Emerging Technologies Toolkit) packages within the Eclipse IDE. It provides easy navigation to tools, documentation, demos, and communities for the various ETTK technologies. In addition, it facilitates easy installation for integrated Eclipse-based ETTK technologies. An RSS reader is also embedded, allowing easy access to ETTK-related RSS feeds and feeds from alphaWorks, developerWorks, and others.

The Emerging Technologies Explorer is part of the Emerging Technologies Toolkit (ETTK), a special collection of emerging technologies from IBM's software development and research labs. This technology runs on Linux® and Windows® (please see the Requirements section for details).

How does it work?

This technology facilitates the easy exploration and installation of integrated, Eclipse-based member technologies by taking advantage of the strengths of the Eclipse platform in a way previously unavailable from alphaWorks. The user is presented with a tree view categorized by technology type; this perspective contains an index of locally installed Technology Explorer-enabled technologies or installable Eclipse-based technologies, along with remotely available technology resources for all ETTK member technologies. Companion views allow the user to explore the listed technologies and their online resources.

If users choose to run a technology that is not installed, hooks have been provided that prompt users to ask if they would like to install it. If they select yes, the Eclipse Update Manager is invoked to directly install the targeted alphaWorks technology into the user's IDE via a new Eclipse Update Server. Other facilities such as an RSS reader view are also available for facilitating exploration of various ETTK-related blogs and content areas.
