Mobile Phone Event Notification for IBM Director
A proof-of-concept solution for sending event notifications to a mobile phone using an email interface.

What is Mobile Phone Event Notification for IBM Director?
This technology uses the IBM Director Software Developer's Kit (SDK) to create a new automated action (an event handler). The new automated action will allow a customer to send a systems management event notification to a customer's mobile phone.
IBM Director currently supports the sending of event notification to both numeric and alpha-numeric pagers. IBM Director also supports the sending of event notification to an email address. However, the IBM Director product has no explicit method of sending event notification to mobile phones. Because mobile phones have almost completely replaced pagers, it is essential that IBM Director customers be able to send event notifications to their IT staff's mobile phones.
Most mobile phone carriers have an email interface that would allow an email message to be routed through the provider's email server to the customer's mobile phone. One solution that has been tried was to use the existing email notification mechanism inside of IBM Director. However, problems arose because the email messages that IBM Director now builds are too large to be received on most mobile phones; therefore, that solution was not usable. This new solution includes a new event action that builds notification messages suitable to a mobile phone.
This package includes an IBM Director extension that will add the new event action to the IBM Director product.
How does it work? This technology uses an email interface that is more universal and easier to access than other Short Message Service options.
This IBM Director extension is used as follows:
- Install the extension by unzipping the installation file into the folder where IBM Director was installed.
- Restart the IBM Director Server.
- Start the IBM Director console application and log in.
- Start the Event Action Plan Builder.
- In order to specify the phone number and email server for the mobile provider, customize the "Send an E-mail to a Mobile Phone" properties.
- Replace alpha-numeric pager actions with the new customized action and save the Event Action Plan.
