What is VoiceXML Interpreter for Firefox Tadpole Extension?

VoiceXML is the W3C standard mark-up language for writing applications that interact with the user through audio dialogs, employing synthesized speech, pre-recorded audio, and automatic speech recognition of the users' spoken input. The goal of VoiceXML was to bring the benefits of the Web programming model to the design of interactive voice response (IVR) systems. IVRs are generally implemented as customer support telephony applications and therefore have no visual user interface.

IBM® collaborated with others in the industry to propose XHTML + Voice, or "X+V", a mark-up language that combines XHTML and VoiceXML so that developers can speech-enable their Web applications. X+V can be used to add VoiceXML dialogs to existing Web applications, resulting in rich "multimodal" interaction with users.

Firefox Tadpole X+V Extension is an open-source project, sponsored by the IBM CIO office of Technology and Innovation, that implements X+V for the Firefox Web browser and other Mozilla XUL applications. VoiceXML Interpreter for Firefox Tadpole Extension is a library with a VoiceXML interpreter and speech run-time libraries that support the Firefox Tadpole X+V Extension.

How does it work?

This technology is implemented in C++ using the Mozilla XPCOM framework and IBM Embedded ViaVoice® libraries.
