Platform requirements for WSDM Browser for CIM and OSGi
Software: IBM WebSphere® Application Server Version 6 (complimentary 60-day trial version available from IBM developerWorks). Note: This package is intended for demonstration purposes only and should not be installed on a production WebSphere Application Server.
For the CIM-to-WSDM mapping implementation:
- Operating System: Windows®
- Software:
- Internet Information Services (IIS) Version 5.1 or above
- Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 or above
Installation instructions
The WSDM Resource Browser is installed as an update (subscription and support package) for WebSphere Application Server, Version 6. To install the package, you must first ensure that you have the latest version of the Update Installer for WebSphere Application Server, Version 6.
- If WebSphere Application Server is currently running, stop it.
- If the Update Installer is not already installed, please follow the installation instructions contained in the "readme" file, which is available from Update Installer Web site. Typically, you will be instructed to unzip the downloaded file in the WebSphere installation directory. On Windows, this directory is typically c:\program files\ibm\websphere\appserver. Unzipping the file should create an updateinstaller directory.
- Start the update installer by running the update executable file in the WebSphere/AppServer/updateinstaller directory.
- The first panel is informational; click on Next in order to continue.
- Enter the path to the installation directory (or accept the default if it is correct), and click on Next in order to continue.
- Select Install maintenance package and click on Next in order to continue.
- Select Browse, and then select the WSDM Resource Browser maintenance package that you have downloaded to your system. Click on Next in order to continue.
- Click on Next in order to begin the installation.
- Click on Finish when the installation is complete.
- Start the WebSphere Application Server.
After installation, the online version of the WSDM Resource Browser for CIM and OSGi documentation is available by accessing the WSDM Browser application in your browser. For example, if your application server is running on Port 9080, the URL to be used would be http://localhost:9080/wsdmBrowser.
Note: The installation procedure will install the run-time support, documentation, message monitor, and Web application in the "default" WebSphere Application Server profile.
Installing the CIM-to-WSDM Mapping
The CIM-to-WSDM Mapping implementation is installed as a Microsoft .NET Framework-enabled application under IIS.
- Install IIS from the Windows installation CD (if not already installed) using the Add or Remove Programs option in the Windows Control Panel. IIS is considered part of Windows. Select Add/Remove Windows Components, and then check IIS.
Note: There are known problems with installing IIS if certain firewall products are active. These products include the enterprise edition of ZoneAlarm and Check Point Integrity Client. IIS installation may hang during installation in a configuration step. Avoiding the problem requires disabling the True Vector service, rebooting, and then installing IIS.
Caution: Running your system on the network without an enabled firewall, even for a short period of time, exposes your system to the risk of attack. You may want to consider disconnecting the system from the network or placing it behind a hardware firewall.
Note: There are reported problems with installing IIS while anti-virus software is running. It may also result in a hang. If this occurs, disable real-time virus checking and reinstall IIS.
- Install the .NET Framework 1.1 (if not already installed). Further information about installing the .NET Framework 1.1 is available from the MSDN .NET Framework Developer Center. Note: If the .NET Framework is installed before IIS, it is necessary to configure IIS by running the command aspnet_regiis.exe -i. This command is contained in the .NET framework installation directory, typically in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\vX.X.XXX, where X.X... is the version of .NET (for example: 1.1, 2.0, etc.)
- Unzip the cim2wsdm.zip package that you downloaded into your IIS configured root location (for example, c:\inetpub\wwwroot).
- Run Internet Information Services from Administrative Tools under the Windows Control Panel.
- Open the /WebSites/Default Web site.
- Right-click on Default Web Site and select New > Virtual Directory.
- Enter WebService3 as the Alias name, and click on Next.
- Enter c:\inetpub\wwwroot\WebService3 as the directory name and click on Next.
Note: If your IIS-configured root location is not c:\inetpub\wwwroot, then you must enter the correct location using your configured root followed by \WebService3.
- Accept the default access permissions and click on Next.
- Click on Finish.
- Start the IIS server. Verify that the installation was successful by invoking the application from a Web browser using http://localhost/WebService3/Service1.asmx. Notes:
- If you receive a message indicating VJ# is not a supported language, then download and install the Microsoft Visual J# .NET Version 1.1 Redistributable Package from the Microsoft Download Center.
- If you receive a response of the form <%@ WebService Language="VJ#" ..., it indicates either that the VJ# package needs to be installed, or that the aspnet_regiis.exe needs to be run as described above.
Removing the WSDM Resource Browser
The Update Installer for WebSphere Application Server, Version 6, may also be used to uninstall the WSDM Resource Browser.
Note: The WSDM Resource Browser should be removed before installing any other subscription and support packages.
- If WebSphere Application Server is currently running, stop it.
- Start the update installer by running the update executable in the WebSphere/AppServer/updateinstaller directory.
- The first panel is informational; click on Next in order to continue.
- Enter the path to the installation directory (or accept the default if it is correct), and click on Next in order to continue.
- Select Uninstall maintenance package and click on Next in order to continue.
- Select wsdm.pak and click on Next in order to continue.
- Click on Next in order to begin the uninstallation.
- Click on Finish when the uninstallation is complete.
